Taking Control in Trumbull
After 15 years of living in her Trumbull, Connecticut home, Lyn’s life started to spiral out of control. “I wasn’t able to work. I was just taking care of my mom [and] was left in let’s just say ‘a situation,'” the single mom remembers. Lyn’s home fell into disrepair and her daughters were so embarrassed to have their friends visit, that they would joke “Our house is easy to find; it’s the ugliest house in the neighborhood.”
Lyn decided to seek help to make her family home safe and healthy again. “Reaching out for help isn’t a weakness, it’s a sign of strength…I finally understood that I can’t do it alone,” she said.
Rescuing Lyn’s Home in a Single Saturday
In the span of just one Saturday, 25 Charter our Community volunteers joined forces with the local affiliate of HomeFront (a volunteer driven home repair program that provides free repairs to low income homeowners) and transformed the house. They installed 11 windows, landscaped the yard, painted the home’s exterior, added new light fixtures and removed yard debris.
“Today, I am so inspired and have hope,” Lyn said. “Everybody from Charter and HomeFront has a smile on their face, and they are happy to help. These are my earth angels.”
Inspiring Experience for Charter Employees
Charter employees enjoyed the uplifting day. “We all felt great about helping a family in need and I am proud of all the volunteers and contractors that were part of this project,” said Facilities and Fleet Manager and Charter our Community House Captain Bill Baker.
Greg Garabedian, Area Vice President, Field Operations, added, “I am proud of the Charter volunteers who took time away from their families to help the [family], providing a positive experience they will not soon forget. Charter our Community is an inspiring company-wide initiative making a positive impact on homes across the country.”
Pledging to Give Back in the Future
Lyn was so impressed with the work on her home that she pledged, “I am going to continue to volunteer myself on Charter our Community and future HomeFront projects. There’s no way I could ever repay these organizations for doing what they’ve done and making my home such a great place to come home to.”
